Grandma

I got out of the truck and walked up the short path to her trailer, up the red stairs and through her creaky door. There she was.....sitting in her usual chair, looking out the window, watching all the cars and trucks rolling by...

then my great-grandpa sat in his usual chair, petting his usual cat.....lost cats that he finds, then brings home to take care of.

He just sits there for hours. says nothing....just looks off and pets his cats....

I walk over to grandma....say the usual greetings.....ask how she's doing.....she's doing fine.

I sit down next to her and listen to her words again. Aunt Jajida is causing trouble again..she's arguing over little things and getting into fights with everybody....and her oldest son is opening credit card accounts in her name. i nod and say "thats bad" , becuse it is.

Cousin Savannah dosent ever want to speak to her sister again. "oh really?", i reply. yes, she says. Savannah is angry that her sister didint talk to her enough the last time the family got together.

it brings a tear to her eye.....she looks far away into nothing...and tells me she would give away every posession she has just to talk to her sister again. just for a few minutes - just to say goodbye....

it brings a tear to my eye too.....that my family would be so selfish, only concerned with themselves, and never listen to their own grandmother. never listen to her wisdom....her advice......her stories.....

her stories about when she was a child.....growing up on the Arkansas side of Memphis, with all the other Indians....eating food off the floor because they couldint afford a table. getting a sack of beans from the "Indian agent" every month or so - if they were lucky. battling with the Ku Klux Klan......trying hard not to get lynched.

and through all her hardships..through everything she's been through, she's not a bitter person....she still cares for her family. She still cares for other people, caring for all people that she knows. She cares for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. one day she may even care for her great-great grandchildren.

she cares for her neighbor's children.....her friends children......everyone's children........all of us.......

maybe one day they will stop yelling and listen.

no...they never listen........maybe its time they do.

maybe its time we all listen.
